Switchfoot and Hoobastank
I like their styles and the music. They have a good, classic, not
over-produced, sound. I like both of their sounds and have listened
to both more than a few times. They are both good quality bands,
IMO. I think what bands like this are doing is great, they are
promoting something positive with their music instead of all the negative
that is in this world so it could be a whole lot worse. For me, it
goes deeper and that's where I get to my reason for writing. Even if
both bands are positive and uplifting one points to themselves and the
other points to God. I don't think looking to ourselves for all of
the answers it the right way. The Bible tells you that but even if
that doesn't do anything for you, the history of the human race will tell
you that. Funny how both bands can sing about the same type of
things (life, issues, society, etc..) have similar styles but I get
something different out of them and have a different taste in my mouth
after listening to them. Their motives are different.
Hoobastank is probably bunch of great guys but from what I've read and
heard from their music they may have tried "religion" but it didn't (I
don't get this) fit them...I know Hoobastank is trying to let people know
that there is more to this life than what the world has to offer and
questioning basically everything in the world.
From their bio
- "A few songs on this record are about religion and my complete
lack of interest in it," say Robb. "A lot of it is about asking
questions or questioning all that people see. It's not all about
religion. 'Out of Control' was based on that and about opening your eyes
after being blinded by being devoted to something. It could be about the
person who devotes their life to their job and ends up feeling lost and,
well, out of control."
Switchfoot is a band, whose lead song writer/singer is a
Christian (believe the keyboard player is too), and their songs too are
trying to let people know that there is more to this life than what the
world has to offer....similar to Hoobie. Something I read
from two Switchfoot interviews (here and here) struck a
chord with me, no pun intended.
- After much prayer and consideration, Switchfoot...agreed upon a
few primary purposes for making its music. Most importantly, Switchfoot
desires to paint an accurate picture of the Christian world view. It's a
picture that isn't always presented truthfully--even by Christians
themselves.
- How do you express the truth of the gospel in a way that
is relevant today? Jon asks' himself. That's what I feel like
I'm really wanting to learn, you know what I mean? I feel like the
prophets expressed timeless truths: There' s nothing new
under the sun. God is eternal. His truth is always going to
be the same. I'm not calling myself a prophet or anything
like that, but I do feel like expressing the timeless truth of who God
is in a way that' s relevant for today.
I like the idea of painting a picture of the Christian world
view. A view where there is always hope not because of who we are
but because of who Christ
is. |
