ReSharper try

by Erik Lane 17. May 2005 07:44

Ok, so I downloaded and started using ReSharper.  My trial is just about up and now comes the hard part...to get my company to purchase the license.  The $150 is a little steap for me.  I know they won't just for one developer so I've passed around the download link to some others in hopes they will like it too.  Maybe if enough of us really like it and can justify the cost then they should buy it for us.  They are usually pretty good about things like that.

If anyone has any good ideas or stats to show people who sign the checks please let me know.

Log4Net

by Erik Lane 16. May 2005 23:20

Oh the fun of log4net.  Do any Google'ing and you'll find some frustration and some positive....maybe by the same people.  I guess it's my turn now.  I've started down the journey of a logging solution for our team's web projects.  A fellow  developer had spent some time on a solution that was very cool and could do a lot of things but for some reason we are not going down that path.  I'm not sure why to be honest.  Either way we've started looking again and since Plumtree already uses log4net that is our first option.

Here are my sources of reference right now:
http://www.ondotnet.com/pub/a/dotnet/2003/06/16/log4net.html
http://weblogs.asp.net/nleghari/articles/easylog.aspx

http://jemos.com/blog/archive/2004/03/30/168.aspx

I'm finding out that Plumtree is using an older version and there is a newer one out 1.2.9.0 that I've been messing with.  Hrm..I hope that doesn't end up being an issue.  We shall see.  If you've had some good (or bad) experience with log4net and willing to give a pointer or two please do.  :-)

It's the shoes!

by Erik Lane 12. May 2005 03:49

Jorriss was talking about shoes and he posted a few links that I followed and man they took me down memory lane.  I've never seen myself as a shoe-head.  I like shoes but I guess it's more of old days syndrome than anything else.  With so many retro shoes on the market it just reminds me of my days in Jr. High and High School and when stuff like that seemed to matter more.  I just bought a pair of shoes a few weeks ago and I knew I wanted to go a little retro.  You know, get those shoes that your Mom wouldn't let you when she was paying for them because they were too expensive.  These are the ones I really wanted to get.  Don't laugh!  Why did I want these?  Probably because these were the pair of shoes in that I wanted the most but never got.  They are just neat and clean and not to mention the hottest shoe at the time.  Man, the memories.  I wish I could forget these though.  These aren't exactly what I had (no NYC logo) but the same colors.  My school colors were black and gold, not yellow but gold and we wore these during basketball season.  Man that was ugly!

I still didn't get aforementioned pair of Jordans because I'm older now and didn't make much sense.  I did get somewhat of a classic I guess - Air Max LTD and they were on sale too.  LOL.

DirecTV 6.2 TiVo Software Upgrade

by Erik Lane 10. May 2005 06:31

PVRblog was talking about this and I too recieved the mailer from DirecTV about the software upgrade.

Find what you want faster. Navigate through your ON-SCREEN GUIDE more quickly than before. Plus, you'll be able to SEARCH faster for your favorites.

  • Have more control. You can sort your NOW PLAYING LIST alphabetically or by date recorded.
  • Get more organized. Our new FOLDERS feature lets you group similar programs in folders for easy reference and retrieval. Some examples:
    • Each TV series with more than one recorded episode.
    • Each WishList® search with a recorded program.
    • TiVo® Suggestions.

The folder feature is pretty nice!  I've been wishing for something like that for a while.  BUT, two things:

  1. SONY SAT-T60, PHILIPS DSR6000R, HUGHES GXCEBOT and HR10-250 will not receive the 6.2 software upgrade.  I have an origial Series 1 TiVo, GXCEBOT, so that one will not get the upgrade and it's on our primary TV.
  2. You have to to make a successful call to the TiVo servers to get the upgrade.  I don't have land line phone service.  I knew this could be an issue later and was a choice we had to make.  Oh well, TiVo is still the best improvment in TV, period!

CAPTCHA Honkers

by Erik Lane 10. May 2005 06:04

Mr. Burke had me laughing this morning.  It seems we have run into the same issues before (I'm sure others too).  Where you go through the thought process of putting together a comment for a blog post and wham!  You're comments are lost....I now copy everything to my clipboard first or even write it up in Textpad first.

  • It's like someone calling you on the phone and asking your opinion about something.  You care enough to give them 15 minutes of your time in a detailed response only afterward saying, "Hello???  Doug???  You there???"  So your only response is to say, *"dang it" and hang up the phone.

As for my own implementation of CAPTCHA, I used Dave's coaching and code so everything should be tight baby.

* Hope Dave doesn't mind me changing his choice of words.  :-)

The old Switch-a-Roo

by Erik Lane 6. May 2005 08:13

Switchfoot and Hoobastank

I like their styles and the music.  They have a good, classic, not over-produced, sound.  I like both of their sounds and have listened to both more than a few times.  They are both good quality bands, IMO.  I think what bands like this are doing is great, they are promoting something positive with their music instead of all the negative that is in this world so it could be a whole lot worse.  For me, it goes deeper and that's where I get to my reason for writing.  Even if both bands are positive and uplifting one points to themselves and the other points to God.  I don't think looking to ourselves for all of the answers it the right way.  The Bible tells you that but even if that doesn't do anything for you, the history of the human race will tell you that.  Funny how both bands can sing about the same type of things (life, issues, society, etc..) have similar styles but I get something different out of them and have a different taste in my mouth after listening to them.  Their motives are different.

Hoobastank is probably bunch of great guys but from what I've read and heard from their music they may have tried "religion" but it didn't (I don't get this) fit them...I know Hoobastank is trying to let people know that there is more to this life than what the world has to offer and questioning basically everything in the world.

From their bio

  • "A few songs on this record are about religion and my complete lack of interest in it," say Robb. "A lot of it is about asking questions or questioning all that people see. It's not all about religion. 'Out of Control' was based on that and about opening your eyes after being blinded by being devoted to something. It could be about the person who devotes their life to their job and ends up feeling lost and, well, out of control."

Switchfoot is a band, whose lead song writer/singer is a Christian (believe the keyboard player is too), and their songs too are trying to let people know that there is more to this life than what the world has to offer....similar to Hoobie.  Something I read from two Switchfoot interviews (here and here) struck a chord with me, no pun intended.

  • After much prayer and consideration, Switchfoot...agreed upon a few primary purposes for making its music. Most importantly, Switchfoot desires to paint an accurate picture of the Christian world view. It's a picture that isn't always presented truthfully--even by Christians themselves.

  •  How do you express the truth of the gospel in a way that is relevant today? Jon asks' himself.  That's what I feel like I'm really wanting to learn, you know what I mean?  I feel like the prophets expressed timeless truths:  There' s nothing new under the sun.  God is eternal.  His truth is always going to be the same.   I'm not calling myself a prophet or anything like that, but I do feel like expressing the timeless truth of who God is in a way that' s relevant for today.

I like the idea of painting a picture of the Christian world view.  A view where there is always hope not because of who we are but because of who Christ is.

You ever been stuck wishing you had enabled Remote Desktop...after the fact?  If you've been in that situation and wondered how to enable it when you couldn't physically get to a machine on your network then this article on WindowsDevCenter.com is for you.

Thanks Jeff for the tip!
