Visual Studio 2005 SP1 Installation

A week ago Mr. Burke ran across an issue with installing SP1 for Visual Studio 2005 (VS2005) where he got a little frustrated with it and stopped the install.  Dave's frustration is understandable; the install of SP1 is almost as long as a fresh install of VS2005 and just before its done it then decides to tell you that you need to uninstall Web Application Projects (WAP).  Thanks to his post I was aware of it when I decided to do the install myself.

So 1 hour and 15 minutes later I've installed SP1.  Yep, an hour and fifteen minutes...  My install might run a few minutes longer since I rebooted after the install just to double check that ReSharper wasn't adversely affected by the update.  FYI - ReSharper ran just fine but I did have to redo my shortcuts.

Here's something else to look for (or try) - I don't think you have to reinstall WAP after installing SP1.  From the Visual Studio 2005 SP1 release notes:

Uninstallation of Visual Studio 2005 Web Application Projects required:
Follow these steps to install Visual Studio 2005 SP1 if you have Visual Studio 2005 Web Application Projects installed:

1. Uninstall the Visual Studio 2005 Web Application Projects add-in.
2. Install Visual Studio 2005 SP1.

It never says that you need to re-install WAP.  So for me, I uninstalled WAP and installed SP1 and the VS2005 splash screen showed that WAP was still installed.  I went ahead with the WAP install, which requires an update first, and every time I tried to run the WAP install it told me I needed to install the update...which I had already installed.  So, technically, I've not reinstalled WAP but everything is running just like it is installed.  So maybe the release notes are right?

The Winds of Change

My wife posted about it on Friday but I'll do the same here.  I'll be starting a new contract in January at Advertising.com and so we'll be making Baltimore our temporary home for the time being.  Anybody up that way?  If so, look me up.

The work sounds really good and the guys I've met will be good to work with and learn from.  Everything is in .NET 2.0, TDD, and CI.  Those are huge bonuses to any project as far as I am concerned.

ReSharper is on Special

ReSharper is a lot like TiVo.  Once you “get it”, you get it.  Get it?  :-)

JetBrains has released version 2.5 for VS 2005 but even better is that they are having a sale.  You can pick up a personal license for only $99.

This is a personal license but if you can't get your employer to buy you a commercial license you can still develop with pleasure but at a great savings!  Plus it is yours and you can take it with you.
