Dave Burke Reviews Community Server 1.0

by Erik Lane 28. February 2005 03:13

Dave Burke reviews his efforts to convert his dotText 0.95 blog to Community Server 1.0.  From the sound of his comments, and his exact words, he's not too excited about it and will be staying with his current setup for now.  I wonder if it's because of all of the cool mods he's made to his current setup or just CS 1.0 in general?

Like most, I will probably give it a try at some time but I'm in no hurry.  I've got no problem with my 0.95 blog here and would only be moving for the sake of being on the new platform.  If we can't convert our blog history then what do you do?  I don't blog an awful lot but I would still like to keep my posting history.

"Fourteen hours of CS nerding under my belt and I have to say that I am quite happy with dotText 0.95 and nGallery, thank you very much. Surprisingly, I just don't know if Community Server is in my future." -Dave Burke

Hey, Eric.  Thanks for the links!  I always knew I would be rewriting my mods from scratch after moving to CS, so that is not an issue.  By blog history, do you mean all of your past posts, comments, trackback, view stats and such?  I was able to move most of my 95 blog to CS until I stopped to focus on other aspects of CS to help me make the final Commit decision.  So preserving posting history is still ugly but doable.

I'm not comfortable with Community Server 1.0 being worth the migration pain, and yeah, now that I think of it, you're right.  Losing a lot of mods for an upgrade doesn't make a whole heckuva lot of sense.

It will be real interesting to read how other developers will be viewing CS.  The problem with being an early voice is that I can prove to be spot-on and know what I'm talking about, or be a complete doofus and viewed as not having a clue.  We'll see what happens.

The migration pain is what I'm worried about...especially for you.  You've done a lot of work to add in some features that the rest of us don't have.  For me, if keeping my posts/comments/trackback/stats/comments history is do-able then I'll look at moving more seriously to get the new features of CS 1.0.  Although I would like to code the mods myself it's just too far down the priority list for me.

Yep, you're an early voice but I would bet on the side of you being spot-on.

Don't bet too much on that analysis. Smile

Yes, I'm hearing a bit of negative sentiment about the general multi-purpose architecture, a more complex data scheme, and select shortcomings of CS 1.0.  I'm getting the feeling over the last few days that most of us will be migrating once the significant newness of CS wears off, some migration support is available, and a few of the small issues are addressed.  In fact I'm leaning more toward it myself, but cannot yet definitely commit because I need more time.  It might not be worth it.  I'm also at a point where I really want to spend those precious latenight hours working in (Beta 2) Smart Client development, so rejecting CS might give me the perfect excuse.

Regards!
