Happy Thanksgiving

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and good time with friends and family.  My Father-In-Law read piece of President Lincoln's proclomation message when he declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863.  It is so refreshing to read and hear that our country is founded on the belief that there is a Most High God who shows mercy to us everyday..still today.  I see it on our money every day but I take it for granted and somehow our society now feels that we are a country of non-religion instead of a country that provides freedom of religion.

Below is an excerpt of his proclomation while the entire message can be found in the Thanksgiving link earlier in this post.

“No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.
It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.
Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States the eighty-eighth.
Proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln, 3 October 1863.”

Yes, it seems that a small group would like to rid the country of any sign of religion.  I'm confused as to how the words "under God" in the pledge and "In God we trust" on the money violates anyones right to practice the religion of their choice.  Children in schools are not made to say "under God" and in fact I recall being told that we were free to leave that out if we felt so inclined.  It's ridiculous.  The history of this nation shouldn't be erased because a few find it offensive.  I find slavery offensive but you won't see that blotted from the history books.

Anyway, Lincoln's address in regard to Thanksgiving was refreshing indeed.

Yep, it seems that freedom of religion has somehow become freedom from religion.  It's obvious that is not what our forefathers intended.
