How do you pronounce Moleskine?

by Erik Lane 8. June 2006 05:40

Here is another one of those words that you see more than you hear (like emoticon).  I think I first heard of them from Scott Hanselman while reading about his personal systems of organization (very good).  Anywho, last week on my flight home from KC I was listening to Scott's podcast, Hanselminutes show #18, and he discussed his personal organization system.  In that I heard him pronounce Moleskine and boy what I waaaay off on the pronunciation.

I wouldn't have guessed it in 25 tries.  I've always pronounced it as mole-skin or mole-skine.  Negative, it's mol-a-skeen-a.

Giddy Up!

ps. I use the regular size ruled notebook.

Mol-a-skeen-a?!?  He was making fun of the name, right?  That's a joke, right?

David, I don't think so.  I looked on Wikipedia and that's how they have it too.  Weird I know.

Yep, that's the correct pronunciation.  Smile  I use the 3x5 pocket size version with my Pilot G2 07 pen for keeping track of everything when I don't have my laptop handy.  Working out great for me!

I've heard it "mol eh skeen ah" also.  And that's what I've been using since (though people look at me funny).  I love using my Hi-Tec-C pens and G-2 0.38s on em!  http://www.jetpens.com/index.php/cPath/239_284_27" rel="nofollow">http://www.jetpens.com/index.php/cPath/239_284_27">http://www.jetpens.com/index.php/cPath/239_284_27" rel="nofollow">http://www.jetpens.com/index.php/cPath/239_284_27

It's not THAT weird though, since their origin is French

And currently they're made by an Italian manufacturer. It's an Italian pronunciation, but not an Italian spelling... funny... thanks for this.

Hmm...I always pronounced either molay-skeena, moles-keen, Molay-skeenee. Geez Louise! I couldn't figure this word out in Cryptid Hunters.

It makes me so mad when I pronounce it correctly, then someone says, "eh, yeah, I LOVE mole-skin notebooks."
Or when I'm in the bookstore and I ask where they've moved the mol-a-skeen-a section, and the clerk replies, "Mole-skeen? They're right over here."

I'm real anal about pronunciation, so I looked it up online at wikipedia and a few other sources before I ever tried to say it aloud.

Every time I heard it pronounced mole-skine it made my skin crawl, but I couldn't come up with a way I liked, so I just stopped saying it! Now I can sound pretentious and French with my pretentious little notebook (80pg cahiers and 9x14 day per page diary)
