TiVo's Auto-Reminder Service

by Erik Lane 15. December 2004 01:04

Sunday on Dave's blog he posted about traditional media cataloging and access services are so lame and that he was impressed with TLC's simple reminder service and how cool it was (and it is cool compared to what other networks do).  He was watching a show and didn't know when the next episode was coming on...he went to the TLC website and used their reminder service to notify him when it was going to air.  Being a TiVo guy, I posted a comment on how TiVo would've handled it.  For the sake of a good comment I'll turn it into a blog post here.  :-)

TiVo would've gotten the next episode automatically and no need to hit the TLC site or remember to watch the show when it was on..even after getting the reminder. Even if this was the first time you had seen the show and didn't have a season pass for it. Go to "Pick Programs to Record, Search by Title" and key in "Extreme Surg" and TiVo would've pulled up all the episodes for the next 14-21 days. Find the one you want and Select "Record this Episode" and your done. :-)

One thing that TiVo and networks are doing is during some commercials you'll see a little green thumbs up (image link here - http://www.pvrcompare.com/DTivoIPreview.jpg - and all you do is press your green thumbs up button and it immediately takes you to the record screen.

Erik, This comment was definitely post-worthy!  Glad you reprinted.  I just read an interesting post on engadget on http://www.tivo.com" target="_blank">TiVo's subscription model and thought of you.

Ahhh, a parser that insert's the http://www.tivo.com" target="_blank">TiVo URL on any appearance of "tivo."  How slick is that?  Good job!

Thanks for the article on engadget.  Yeah, it was kind of weird at first to pay the subscription fee but when I started comparing DVR's http://www.tivo.com" target="_blank">TiVo was the way to go because of its "smarts" and not just being a digital VCR.  I feel like I'm just paying licensing fee for the software just like any other software that I own and I saw the money upfront for the hardware.  But with times changing they need to shift away from that.

Luckily I also have DirecTV so my fee is only $5/month vice $12/month for stand alones.

I would have guessed you already read the engadget article.  I personally don't have a problem with the monthly subscription fees either.  My biggest issue remains the lack of http://www.tivo.com" target="_blank">TiVo's dual tuner support.  One other issue is that if Adelphia's On Demand services are tied to the DVR box, then it would be game over and I'd probably stay with Adelphia to retain the On Demand enhancements.
