Tools of a Software Craftsman

by Erik Lane 11. September 2007 18:08

I don't know if I would call myself a "Software Craftsmen" but I totally agree with Joey about the tools you use to build software.  Joey seems to be a little more dedicated than myself because he carries his keyboard to and from work everyday (I only carry my mouse & iPod back and forth each day).  Before I started up my new project I made sure I had everything I needed on my keychain to get my new machine up and ready to go ASAP.  A new machine just doesn't feel like home until it is "just right".

Critical Apps:
ReSharper
Beyond Compare
SlickRun
Textpad
Fiddler
Reflector
TcpTrace
Open Command Window Here

Expresso
Task Switch XP
Firefox + Extensions

Critical Settings:
Visual Studio Settings
ReSharper Settings
SlickRun Magic Words

Giddy Up!

Yeah, I mean, I most definitely don't want to come off as an "elitist" by using the term "craftsman".  In fact, if you saw the license plate on my car, you'd know I'm just a codemonkey.  Tong

But I just think that term best describes perhaps what I'm trying to attain.  As in the subtitle for the Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master.

I too definitely like to have a "portable work environment" as I call it.  On my old blog I posted about it:  devauthority.com/.../1192.aspx" rel="nofollow">devauthority.com/.../1192.aspx">devauthority.com/.../1192.aspx" rel="nofollow">devauthority.com/.../1192.aspx

Although since then, I've added/replaced many of the portable apps I use.

Joey - I wasn't trying to implying an "elitist" statement or anything like that.  Smile  I just feel uncomfortable with the term Craftsman...although I agree, I like it, and really like "From Journeyman to Master".
